If you haven't already heard about the Garmin Approach S40 then it is definitely one of the golf accessories worth looking at.. The price has come down recently and at the price they are on Amazon now they are a great deal for the features that this thing packs in.
With well over 100 reviews on and a solid 4.5 star rating plenty of golfers seem to be opting for the S40.
This watch is the smaller brother of the Garmin S60 Approach but boasts a lot better battery life of 15 hours which is up from the 10 hours on the S60, which when you think about it is another 1 to 1.5 extra rounds of golf before needing to recharge. The Garmin S40 will easily last over 7 days in "watch mode" should you wish to wear it as an every day watch.. It is also presented in a smaller overall package than the S60 with less bulk on your wrist during your rounds which i have found to be a lot more comfortable.
One thing that is worth noting about the Garmin S40 Approach is that there is no Heart Rate monitor built in to the watch. Whilst this is not a massive problem during a round of golf (i mean who's heart rate gets up that much walking around a golf course) but it is something that would be useful for the other exercise profiles of walking, running and cycling that are built in to the watch. It does still track distance, speed and calories burned in these profiles
This watch comes pre loaded with over 41,000 courses from around the world.. I can honestly say that i have ever been to a course that the watch hasn't picked up.. The GPS is very quick and once you have selected the play golf option the watch is ready to play in about 15 seconds. The Garmin Approach S40 automatically tracks the shots you hit as long as you have the last shot feature turned on.. One thing that i do recommend for this feature is wearing the watch on your left arm. I usually wear my watch on my right being a lefty but the shot recognition is no where near as accurate.. Possibly due to the positioning of the motion sensor inside the watch.
Once you walk on to the green of any hole the watch recognises this and asks you to input the amount of putts you have taken.. It will then add this to the number of shots you have taken throughout the hole and give you your final stroke score. It also gives you the option to enter if you hit your tee shot left, right (usually the case for me) or straight and if you had any penalty shots in the hole. It will then give you your score and commit it to the memory.
The Garmin S40 Approach gives you the choice when you set it up wether you would like to record your score as strokes taken or using the Stableford points system. This is confirmed when you pair your watch to the specifically made Garmin Golf App which is available for Android or iOS devices.
This watch is customisable too. There are numerous different straps you can buy to fit the watch (it has the same quick release connection as the Samsung gear watch) to make it match your golf wardrobe and there are screen protectors available too which i cannot recommend enough after damaging my 1st watch on the corner of a table.
Would i recommend this watch..... Yes without a second though... If you have a golf watch you know the benefits they bring... If you are new to the game and yet to take the leap then this is the way to go.. Golf is so much easier when you know how far you are away from any pin oh and did i mention after a few rounds of the watch recording how far you hit your clubs it even begins to make recommendations on which club you should hit for the distance away from the flag you are.. Couple all of the that with the fact it saves all of your scores from all of your rounds on to the App allowing you to check on your progress at any time you have here a very capable Golf Accessories Watch that will without doubt improve your game and bring your scores down... It did for me...
